3 Causes of Car Breakdowns & How to Prepare

Each year, drivers across the country need to make a call they weren't expecting. It's a call we're familiar with at Ed Vintner Automotive. It's the request for roadside assistance or towing. The reasons behind the call vary, which is expected when there are hundreds of parts making up the important systems in any modern vehicle.

The reasons why a car or truck loses the ability to move depends on what happens, but there are some common causes for breakdowns that you should be aware about.

3 Reasons for Vehicle Breakdowns

  • Battery Problems: Modern batteries last between 3-5 years on average, but outdoor elements can affect your battery lifespan. If you drive in an environment known for extreme cold or heat, you may need a replacement battery sooner than a driver who lives in a mild climate. Failing batteries may give off some warning signs before they stop for good. If you notice dim headlights or interior lights, or you notice your power windows don't move as fast, you may need a new battery or risk a breakdown.
  • Overheating: Your vehicle generates a lot of heat. That's why coolant is so essential to the life of your car or truck. Coolant keeps your vehicle at safe operating temperatures. When there's a leak or you have no coolant left, your vehicle will overheat. Hot temperatures damage the different systems and parts that make up your vehicle until they stop working altogether. When you see your engine temperature in the red or receive a warning light that the vehicle is operating too hot, get off the road.
  • Flat Tires: Road hazards take down thousands of vehicles in our country each year. Sometimes you don't see the nail sticking up soon enough. Other times you notice the hazard but don't have the ability to swerve. Either way, flat tires are a common cause of roadside vehicles and unhappy drivers. On the bright side, this problem doesn't require a tow truck if you have a spare tire or donut tire in the trunk. You also have a pretty good idea of the price point for a replacement tire, and compared to other automotive problems, this isn't the worst.

While you may not always realize when you're vehicle is on the verge of a breakdown, you can prepare for it. It's a good idea to have the number of a nearby tow shop or roadside assistance provider handy. This should be someone you trust to provide proper vehicle recovery at a fair rate. If you need roadside assistance or towing in Scranton, PA or surrounding areas, Ed Vintner Automotive is available. Our towing number is (888) 555-5555, and we'd be happy to help you.

Thanks for reading; safe travels.
